Book Blogger Hop & Follow Friday! [8]

Welcome blog hoppers!
I hope you enjoy your visit here at Writer Quirk!
^_^

Book Blogger Hop

FFQ: ACK! Your favorite book/movie character (example Hermione Granger played by the Emma chick) just walked into the room! Who is it and what would be your first reaction? You get extra points if you include visual stimulation.

WQA:  Ack!  I don't know!  Let me think...oh yes.  It would be
Captain Jack Sparrow
and my first reaction would be to squint at him to make sure he is real.  Especially if I am seeing multiple Jacks.

BBHQ:  What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?

WQA:  What keeps me reading is a unique/distinct voice, a bit of mystery, good storytelling and atmosphere, and an outside-the-box quality when it comes to premise, settings, and situations.
Great writing, wit, humor, and snark also help.
^_^
As for what makes me want to stop reading: flat/irritating/stupid characters, lack of forward motion, overkill of agenda, and supreme unbelievability.  The writing would have to be ridiculously bad for me to give up on it due to that (I did get through Twilght after all).
*dodges tomatoes*

  14. Aw! There is such a thing as a well-written elementary book, I promise you.
    I think there's so much dreck out there for that age level because lots of authors (and people in general) look down on that group, and say, "Well, it's 'just' for kids, so I don't have to try that hard."

    But when it's written well for elementary students, the results can be amazing.

  17. Hopping through. I especially dislike authors who have too strong an agenda. I don't want to read a political diatribe - I want to read a book.

  19. Love the lively colors on your blog! I am your newest GFC follower. I am visiting via Book Blogger Hop. My answer to the question.

    I started reading a book the last month and it was suppose to be a very good book. But after giving it a couple of chapters I just couldn’t get into it. I put the book aside to read another day. I don’t like to do that because I feel as if my mind might have had too many distractions and I didn’t give the book a chance. So I always try to wait for another day to give it another go. I have so many other books calling to me from my to-be-read list that it can really be distracting. READ ME! READ ME!
    I prefer reading and reviewing Christian Fiction but I do read a varity of other books. I just can’t handle too scary or gory. Suspense and Mysteries I like. No explicit adult books either if I do find one I really want to read I just skip over the x-rated stuff. So what genre do I read?

  20. @Grace: I agree. Thanks and done!

    @Jenny: Thank you, and I love your blog name! Two of my favorite things to find in a book!

    @Sharon: Me too. I've seen nearly everything he's been in. Thanks!

    @Phantom Paragrapher: Thanks!

    @Lan: Thank you and thank you!

    @Kyanara: Thanks and you too!

    @Jessica: I haven't gotten to hop around much yet, but I haven't seen him elsewhere so far. I've found a lot of Harry Potter characters though, which is to be expected because HP is awesome.

    @Dani: Yes! A snark sympathizer! I've come across a couple books this past month that have some good snark and that make me smile while reading. People around me think I'm nuts, though. ^_^

    @Kristina: I agree! It would be so cool to hand out with him. Maybe I could ply him with rum and get him to sing a pirate or pub song? Probably wouldn't even need the rum, lol. And thanks!

    @Megan: I could never be pirated out if JD is involved, lol. Thanks!

    @CharmaineElaine: Thank you, thank you! Yes, I prefer Captain Jack to that wimpy Will Turner any day (says WQ, the former Legolas stalker, lol).

    @Kristen: Thank you and done!

    @Amy: Thank you! Maybe we should take a Caribbean cruise to find him? ^_^

    @Deb: Thanks for the info!

    @Steph: Thanks and done!

    @Crystal: Thanks for visiting again! And that sounds like a lot fun but I bet it's always crazy there! I saw a Captain Jack impersonator at the Ren Fest here and did the same thing!

    @Emily: Seems like there are a lot savvy bloggers out there! lol. And thanks!

    @Madigan: Oh no! I didn't mean actual elementary school books or books for that age - I just meant poor writing, bad grammar, no organization, that sort of thing (kind of like when a first grader writes a story - it's cute but it would be very hard to read a novel written that way). I took that bit out because it didn't express what I meant it to. I have seen some really good books for children. My favorite would be the Skippyjon Jones series, which is super fun and the rhymes get stuck in my head. ^_^

    @SJune: Thank you and you too!

    @Tammi: So you get Captain Jack wherever you go! Clever! Thanks!

    @Teen Fiction Centre: Thank you thank you and done!

    @Alison: Absolutely. Thanks for visiting again!

    @Beth: Thanks and thanks!

    @Patricia: Thank you! I have that happen too. I was in the middle of listening to a contemp YA audio book, but it wasn't catching me up enough and all I could think about was moving on to something more my type (namely paranormal YA). I think I will finish it eventually, but still decided to put it aside for now.

    Thanks for hopping by everyone! Great to meet (and see again) all of you! ^_^
