Update!
I've been behind on watching The Bachelorette and writing my recaps these last couple of weeks due to going out of town and an annoying back problem, but I will be back recapping next week!
Also, I'm excited for the upcoming Bachelor in Paradise as well as America's Next Top Model, which will premiere around the same time next month. ANTM has been one of my favorite shows for years, but I haven't kept up with it as much as I wish I did, so I'm going to attempt to watch this season as it unfolds.
Some book and podcast posts are also on their way, so be on the look-out for those!
Happy watching, reading, and listening quirks!

As I change, so must the blog.
On May 15th, Writer Quirk turned five. That's incredibly difficult for me to wrap my head around. In those five years, so much has changed, not only within my own life, but even in the worlds of book blogging and publishing.
Five years ago I started Writer Quirk because I wanted to be part of community, share my writing journey, and talk about YA books. Those things are still true. But also at that time, every spare moment I had went to writing or reading. I didn't watch a lot of TV, I didn't hang out much with friends, I didn't have a husband or a ton of responsibility.
That, of course, is no longer true. I'm married, I have to take care of the house and a disabled mother, all while working full time, but I don't have the energy I had five years ago. That is partly due to worsened health and the toll depression has taken/is still taking on my mind and body. I still write and think about my novels and ideas, but I don't do it nearly as much as I want to. I read still, but I go through long periods where I don't/can't read.
Also in those five years, I found fandoms. I experienced Doctor Who, Supernatural, and Sherlock for the first time. My enthusiasm for a childhood favorite, My Little Pony, was reborn thanks to my friends being fans of the new show. I became active on Twitter and Tumblr. I became a feminist.
Now I watch a lot of things (mostly thanks to the miracles that are Hulu and Netflix). I have a huge passion for The Voice (which you would have noticed since I live tweet it sometimes), and I love vegging out to The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise. I love scripted shows, reality shows, movies, music, and of course, books, and I want to talk about all of it.
I love blogging, but having massive reading slumps makes running a blog solely about books extremely difficult, so instead of closing the blog or quitting, the blog is evolving to fit the me of today. So that is where Writer Quirk is headed. Instead of just focusing on YA books, reading, and writing, I'm broadening the blog's scope to include whatever pop culture item or experience I like.
I'm not changing the blog's name or site or anything, just the overall theme. There will still be book related posts (as books are a part of pop culture), they just won't be the only thing.
I want to thank all of you that have been with me over these last five years, and I hope you continue on this journey with me.
Lots of love,

Of Fever and Dreams
There's been a lot of talk in my neck of the woods about babies. Of my best friends, one has an 18-month-old, one has a six year old and one-year-old twins, and another is seriously contemplating starting a family sooner rather than later. I've even done some babysitting and spent more time lately with tiny humans than ever in my life.
And I'll admit it - I've had some Baby Fever over the past months (and it wasn't just me; The Hubs got a fair dose of it too).
But then I found out that one of my blogger buddies cleared that first big publishing hurdle - she got an agent. As I was reading her blog post about the experience (which you can find HERE), a feeling came over me that I didn't expect.
I didn't want a baby. I wanted a book - a book with my name on it.
In fact, I want a book way more than I ever thought I wanted a baby.
That may make me sound like a horrible person, but it's the truth. I'm not ruling kids out, I just want to become an author more than I want to become a parent. There are a multitude of factors that went in to me even contracting Baby Fever, but they are a little mired and weighty, so suffice it to say that in these past months when my depression got so bad, I lost myself a little and was looking for things that might help bring me some hope for the future. But being a mother was never a dream of mine. An eventuality maybe, but not a dream.
Being an author is my dream.
Since the Baby Fever has broken (and my depression is well in-hand thanks to the new meds), I feel the certainty of that dream. Not the certainty that it will happen in the way I wish it (because I have no control over that), but the certainty that I want it to happen and will do what is in my power to make it happen.
And now, without looking for it, I find that I have hope to spare.

An Unhappy Hiatus
Hello quirks,
I've been putting this off because I was hoping circumstances would change and I wouldn't need to do this, but they haven't, so here we are.
Writer Quirk is going on an indefinite hiatus starting today.
I love blogging and reviewing, but my mental health is at a point right now where the stress of trying to keep posting reviews and such when I'm barely reading and barely functioning offline is one thing too many. I've never been a super-frequent poster and have been very lenient with myself on how I run this blog, but the guilt of not reading and not posting is getting to me, so I need a break from it.
It's difficult to put into words what is going on in my head that is making life so tough, so suffice it to say that despite efforts to battle my depression, I'm losing. In a way, things have gotten better since I switched to a new medication, as in suicidal thoughts and self-harm impulses are way down, but the pervasive sadness and lethargy I feel seems to only increase. Add in new stress at my day job and my usual stress at home, and I'm a zombie pretending to be human only when necessary, and it is exhausting.
I hope to return sooner rather than later, but only time will tell if that is possible. Until then, I hope you read amazing books, write your hearts out, and live life to the fullest.
