G - Authors from A to Z Challenge

Authors from A to Z is a posting challenge hosted by
Heather at Proud Book Nerd. The challenge is simple: each day for the month of June (except Sundays) share your favorite authors whose last name corresponds to the letter for that day.  For more info, click the photo!

How I'm participating in the challenge:
I am trying to highlight at least three authors (YA or otherwise) per letter, some current favorites, others future favorites. If I cannot come up with three, I will substitute favorite books that start with the letter of that day. If that doesn't work, then just for fun I am going to list songs that start with the letter of that day. And if that doesn't work, well, it will be a surprise!

Today's Letter: G

Elizabeth Gilbert
Some of my friends and I have a little club where we pick a book each month to read (I can't say it is only a book club because we do a lot more than read and discuss books).  One month our book was Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.  I had heard from a lot of people that the book wasn't as good as the movie (something I don't hear often) because it was done in a sort of essay/journal form and could be boring.  So I went into reading it on the lookout for the first thing I could find to make it a DNF.  But I didn't want to put it down.  Not only was Gilbert's story engrossing, but her style of writing was so smooth and had such a flow I honestly felt like I was reading fiction.  Really good fiction.  I felt like I knew her by the end of it, like I could see each place and person she described with clarity.  It was a really inspiring read, and I won't have any trouble picking up her other works int he future.

Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (Future Favorite)
I know this is technically two people and one of them does not have a last name starting with "G," but since they wrote the Caster Chronicles together, and Garcia's name is first, it counts (right?).  Anyway, I currently have Beautiful Creatures sitting on my shelf, waiting for me, begging me, to read it.  I haven't yet because it is on the new-to-us-all list of possible reads for my aforementioned group-of-friends-who-read-amongst-other-things (let us just call it [soi] to make things simpler), and I don't want to read it until it is picked.  But I really really really want to read it.  Small town, secrets, and male POV.  I am so in.  Just not yet.  >.<

Jessica Day George (Future Favorite)
I am a sucker for fairy tales (the Brothers Grimm kind, not really the fairy-faerie-fey kind) and I'm fawning over George's collection of re-imaginings.  Again, I've read samplings and her style puts you right in that fairy tale moods, full of awe and wonder.  And somehow interweaving The Twelve Dancing Princesses (one of my fave fairy tales) and Cinderella?  Get my dancing slippers and let's go to the ball!

  1. Eat, Pray, Love is sitting on my shelf. I've heard conflicting things about it, but hope to have some time for it soon!

I love retold fairy tales. I'll have to look up George!

  2. I had as well, so I guess it is one of those you either like it or you don't, but what I saw of the movie was definitely entertaining! lol.

  3. Perhaps I should see the movie first. Sometimes that compels me to read a book. (It worked for The Time Traveler's Wife!)
