A - Authors from A to Z Challenge

Authors from A to Z is a posting challenge hosted by
Heather at Proud Book Nerd. The challenge is simple: each day for the month of June (except Sundays) share your favorite authors whose last name corresponds to the letter for that day.  For more info, click the photo!

How I'm participating in the challenge:
I am trying to highlight at least three authors (YA or otherwise) per letter, some current favorites, others future favorites. If I cannot come up with three, I will substitute favorite books that start with the letter of that day. If that doesn't work, then just for fun I am going to list songs that start with the letter of that day. And if that doesn't work, well, it will be a surprise!

Today's Letter:  A

Douglas Adams
Maybe you've seen or heard about the movie The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that came out a few years ago, or maybe you've never heard of it at all.  Either way, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a four (five...six? and a short story?) book series by Douglas Adams.  Some words to describe the series:  random, hilarious, nonsensical, pear-shaped, ridiculous, awesome.  Even when I find things funny in books I don't often bust a gut laughing, but with this series I laugh out loud enough to annoy any bystanders.  And when I mentioned random, I mean more random than even a quirkster like me could imagine.  Crazy-out-there random.  And Fantastic.  Douglas Adams amazed me with each line on the page.

Jane Austen
I have to admit, I have only read a few Austen novels.  Pride and Prejudice was not one of them (but I did love the movies!).  However, I love how Austen wove tales together.  So many characters, so much social commentary, so much wit and charm and relational twists, what's not to love?  And while some may not like the telling-not-showing style of writing that was popular for Austen's time period, I really think that without it, the stories would not be what they are.  I think the style of writing really sets the tone, lets you know you're reading Austen.  So far, Persuasion is my favorite.

Kelley Armstrong (Future Favorite)
I've seen Kelley Armstrong's books on the YA shelves for quite a while, and the more I hear the more interested I become.  I haven't had a chance to read any of her work yet, but I'm looking forward to starting.  The only question now is, do I start with The Darkest Powers series or Darkness Rising series?

  1. Great choices! I love Douglas Adams and Jane Austen, two of my (very different) favorites.

Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers series didn't bowl me over, but she's a strong writer and I'm glad I read the first one, so that I can recommend the series with confidence to folks I think might like it.

  2. I like your ideas for music as a last resort – or maybe second-to-last resort! LOL I might have to go that way, too! The other thing I thought was maybe movies or something ... We'll see. (X has me most confounded! LOL)

Jane Austen is definitely one of my favorites.

I have not read either of the other authors, but I have heard of both – especially Hitchhiker's Guide. I think I might have to add that to my list for sure!

    Thanks for playing along! :-)

  3. Madigan: Thanks! I had to double check when I wrote the post that I really had talked about Adams and Austen in the same post. Now that I think about it, an Adams version of Austen would have been epic, lol. And thanks for the heads up on Armstrong. I don't mind reading a meh story by a strong writer. At least I can learn something. ^_^

PBN: Thanks! I'm happy I joined in the fun! You know we could also do music/bands-in-movies-based-on-books. That would solve your X problem (The xx are on the I Am Number Four soundtrack). That's probably what I'll be doing for that letter!
